Take Steps to Prevent Lyme Disease, Says Helm
6/9/2014
HARRISBURG – Rep. Sue Helm (R-Dauphin) is reminding residents to take precautions when participating in outdoor activities to prevent Lyme disease.

A tick-borne illness, Lyme disease is carried through the bite of a deer tick. The disease causes a general infection throughout the human body. While symptoms often manifest in the form of a bulls-eye rash at the site of the tick bite, the rash may not always appear. Other symptoms include fever, malaise, fatigue, headache, muscle aches and joint pain.

Although most cases of Lyme disease in their preliminary stages are readily treated with antibiotics, if left untreated, Lyme disease can have serious consequences including nervous system damage and debilitating arthritis.

The risk for contracting Lyme disease is highest during the months of April through July. With roughly 4,000 cases reported in Pennsylvania annually, the highest incidence is in the southeastern parts of the Commonwealth.

Helm reminds residents to avoid tick-infested habitats, including heavily wooded areas, tall grass and other areas where deer may frequent. If that is not possible, individuals should take precautions and wear protective clothing, including long sleeves and pants; use insect repellents; and check themselves, their children and their pets for ticks following outdoor activities.

For more information on Lyme disease prevention, visit Helm’s website at www.SueHelm.net.
